What is R?

R is a specialized programming language designed primarily for
   statistical computing and data visualization. It was created 
   by statisticians Ross Ihaka and Robert Gentleman in 1993 and 
   has since become a powerful tool for data analysis, widely 
   used by data scientists, statisticians, and researchers.
